1.16-1.18 is extremely bad

i'm trying to play on an smp, but none of the chunks ever load, also i can't even join sometimes.
i've tried putting the render distance higher/lower, restarting my computer, deleting my minecraft folder, reinstalling minecraft.

pls help
i am on a mac
