Handling different versions of an addon

Hello fellow addon devs, I've been having a time deciding on what works best for my workflow and wanted to know how others are also handling this.

When it comes to having a free version of an addon and a paid one how does everyone handle this situation? Just a different git branch and building the addon from that branch (I'm guessing to make this easier I would just keep the paid version of the addon at the same version number of the free one at all times), or are you using a completely...
