Help figuring out the best way to offer User Upgrades with different durations?

I'm trying to figure this out.

Let's say I offer an upgrade to "gold" like so:

• $10 for 3 months
• $20 for 6 months
• $30 for 12 months

I noticed a few things:

1. If a user buys 3 months, the option to purchase another 3 months disappears
2. If they buy 6 months, then they have 2 concurrent "gold" memberships (a 3 month and a 6 month)
3. If I use the "GiftUpgrades" addon, then a user can extend another users membership if they gift the same...
