No sound when name said in chat

This started yesterday, and basically, no matter what launcher or client I use, when my name is said in chat there's no ting sound.
I tried just logging in from the vanilla launcher, with all vanilla settings, and still no sound is played when my name is said in chat.
Is anyone else experiencing this or have they experienced it? I would love to know what the fix it, because it really feels like it shouldn't be a difficult fix and also it's not such a big deal, I'm not too bothered about it...
