Same look as nodes/article/expanded view - but needed in "New Posts" widget

So when selecting a node and changing the forum type to "Article" then adjusting "Display Style" to "Expanded" seems to show thumbnails in forum list...which works great! but now I need to have the widget "New Posts" perform the same action... I think I need to adjust the "display condition" in a template-style expression. I'm I correct? or way off? There is no option to change display style to "expanded" within widgets.
What is the syntax for this? and is this all I would need to do to...
