We have had leather armour and chain armour in the game since forever. When was the last time someone actually used any of them?
We've had gold tools and gold armour in the game for such a long time, when has anyone used them?
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm sure most of our Minecraft worlds went from wood to stone to iron to diamond to netherite.
Not that that invalidates the point, you can think all of these features are rubbish as well and shouldn't be in the game. But it doesn't hurt to have as a feature.
Obviously main game development and modding development are completely different, but even people with know programming knowledge could mod a new tool type and armour type into the game. Its where alot of modding tutorials start out.
I'm very excited to see what Mojang has in store in terms of oxidisation mechanics interacting with this, if they will have any unique property, if they will shuffle around the rest of the progression curve around this. But even if they don't? I don't really mind. Its just another fun option to have. And there is no harm in that.
Sure you might not use them. But I really think its just a nice thing to have in the game. As someone who doesn't build much, I have stacks and stacks of copper in a chest on every world. I'll love using these early game so that I can use limited iron on buckets, shears, minecarts, that kind of thing.
Minecraft is a sandbox game. It doesn't have a perfect progression system, it never will, its all kinds of janky because its a sandbox. And I love that about it.
