Newer versions of minecraft has lots of new blocks and cool features(waterlogging, new mobs, debug stick) that can help you build, how about updating whole build battle to 1.18 or 1.16 at least?
My ideas is to update entire build battle to 1.18, only keeping solo 1.8 unchanged. When you join the build battle lobby in any older versions, you are only able to play solo 1.8. If you try to join other build battle modes, the server will ask you to use the supported version instead.
