How do you keep yourself from getting lost in the new caves?

I used to just put a torch on the lefthand side as I went down, so that on the way up they'd be on the right. "Right takes you to light"

Now with caves being more spacious and large, it's hard to find a new way to keep track of where I've been and how to get out. I tried to Google some tips and tricks but all of them are from the old cave generation. How do you guys navigate now?
