I need someone to dumb down strings for me

I am an amateur. Could a vetern please help me understand some of these concepts for the new housing update?

* Do I need to worry about things Ive already made with stats breaking?
* Conner talked in the forum post about having stats like 500.5 mean double. Could someone elaborate this? When I double the stat, am I multipling it by 2?
* Whats up with the letters? D and L "fix / set" stats? Im unsure of what this lets me do.
* I know the community has been yearning for strings for a while...
