Removing buttons via 'removebuttons' from editor drop down doesn't work

In XF2.1 the 'removebuttons' argument into the editor template would remove buttons inside a dropdown. In XF2.2, this no longer appears to work.

XF.EditorButtons.recalculate appears to process the removal correctly, but this just isn't reflected into the live dropdown.
